(The Timely) Return of the Rentals

Since the ’95 debut of “Return of the Rentals”, The Rentals haven’t released much. Now we know why. Via P4K, regarding “‘Songs About Time’…once a day, Matt Sharp’s post-Weezer project put up a new photo. Once a week, they’ll post a new black-and-white short film with an original soundtrack that you won’t be able to find anywhere else. And once every three months, they’ll release a new mini-album, with the first one coming in April. You’ll be able to stream or buy them on the Rentals site and nowhere else. At the end of the year, it will all be bundled into a box set.” And here you thought they really were slackers. Enough with the 90s references…a much more interesting thread the Rentals have been weaving since their inception, is the exploration of time as a concept. From their misleadingly named debut, “Return of the Rentals” to their black and white (timeless) short films, the temporal thread continues to grow.

The Rentals debuted their first short film on New Year’s Day, 2009. Every week since they have released a new video. The latest offering, “February 10”, features the girl in this film, so there seems to be recurring themes. 52 films total by the end of the year. 2009 continues the redefining of music and it’s distribution via the Internet.
